A Fresno Afternoon at CRŪ Winery: Central Coast Wines, Cookie Pairings, and a Tale of Two Palates

If you’ve ever driven down Nees and wondered about that sleek little tasting room tucked beside the vineyards, CRŪ Winery is exactly the kind of place that rewards your curiosity. Fresno is lucky to have a satellite tasting room for a winery that’s actually based closer to the Bay Area—Monterey County, to be exact. Their production and vineyard partnerships stretch across California’s Central Coast, and one of the displays inside breaks down the regions they source from: Santa Lucia Highlands, Arroyo Seco, Paso Robles, Edna Valley, Santa Maria Valley. Basically, if it’s a cool‑climate AVA with a reputation for expressive Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, CRŪ has a foot in it. Walking into the tasting room feels like stepping into a modern wine lounge—warm wood, clean lines, shelves of bottles, and a bar that invites you to settle in. It’s the kind of space that makes you want to linger, and judging by the crowd, plenty of people do.

Tasting Options for Every Kind of Wine Drinker

One thing I appreciated right away: CRŪ doesn’t assume everyone wants the same tasting experience. Their menu breaks into several paths:
– White‑only flights
– Red‑only flights
– Mixed flights
– Tiered tastings depending on how deep you want to go
– And yes… the Girl Scout Cookie pairing flight
That last one is exactly what it sounds like—wine paired with cookies. It’s whimsical, a little nostalgic, and surprisingly well thought out. (If you’ve never had a Grenache with a Thin Mint, you’re missing out.)

A Tale of Two Palates: Ronan & Mike Edition

I’m an equal‑opportunity wine drinker, but I usually drift toward reds—Pinot Noir, Grenache, Syrah, anything with a little structure and spice. Mike, on the other hand, leans white. Not because he dislikes reds, but because whites tend to be less dry and more refreshing for him. CRŪ’s lineup made it easy for both of us to find something to love.

From the photos I snapped, our tasting included: —2021 Seven Hills Vineyard Chardonnay; bright, peachy, and floral—Mike’s immediate favorite. —2021 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir; classic Willamette Valley cherry‑raspberry goodness with a soft rose‑petal lift. —2020 Sonatera Vineyard Grenache Strawberry, cherry, and a little white pepper. This one was my pick of the day. —2021 Paloma Vineyard Syrah; dark fruit, baking spice, and a touch of leather. A cozy red without being heavy.

The Central Coast Story Behind the Glass

One of the displays in the tasting room breaks down the AVAs CRŪ sources from, and it’s a great reminder that Fresno’s tasting room is just the gateway. Their grapes come from some of the most respected vineyards along the Central Coast:

– Santa Lucia Highlands – windy, cool, and perfect for long‑ripening Pinot and Chardonnay
– Arroyo Seco – diverse soils and one of California’s oldest AVAs
– Paso Robles – warm days, cool nights, and bold reds
– Edna Valley – foggy, coastal, and known for elegant whites
– Santa Maria Valley – one of the earliest AVAs, with an east‑west orientation that channels ocean breezes

It’s a nice touch that CRŪ brings all of that coastal influence right into Fresno’s backyard.

Final Thoughts

CRŪ Winery’s Fresno tasting room is one of those local gems that blends accessibility with a sense of discovery. Whether you’re a red drinker, a white drinker, or someone who just wants to see what wine pairs with a Girl Scout cookie, there’s something here for you. And honestly? It’s just a great way to spend an afternoon—good wine, good company, and a little taste of the Central Coast without me even having to leave Fresno.
