Firestone Walker: 805

I’ve had plenty of Firestone Walker beers over the years—most recently their take on the Cali Squeeze line, which was (and somehow still is) also produced by SLO Brewing. But despite all that, I’d never tried one of their longest‑running classics: 805. Honestly, I didn’t even realize 805 was a Firestone Walker beer until recently.

Before getting to the glass, let’s answer the obvious question: what does “805” mean? The number is a nod to the 805 area code, which covers much of California’s Central Coast—including Paso Robles, where Firestone Walker got its start. The beer was originally brewed as a local‑only release meant to capture that laid‑back, coastal vibe. It outgrew the region, but the name stuck as a kind of cultural stamp.

As for the beer itself, 805 is a blonde ale—and to me, it drinks with the same refreshing ease as a lager (think Modelo) but with a little more personality. It’s light, mild, slightly sweet, and clean. If coffee analogies help: a blonde ale is to ales what a blonde roast is to coffee—gentle, approachable, and built for easy sipping rather than deep contemplation.
