CA is getting a new, huge reservoir—California’s last large reservoir built was in 1979 (Melones). California is quite a liberal state, and it cares very much about the environment, so it is kind of a big deal that the newest reservoir, Sites Reservoir, to be may begin construction in 2026, and possibly be finished in the 2030s. Sites Reservoir is led by the Sites Project Authority, of which Jerry Brown (former CA governor) is the executive director. The project required federal permission, with the federal government pledging to pay up to 25% of the total cost. That’s quite surprising, considering that the Trump Administration is totally not a fan of California, and most especially, Governor Gavin Newsom. Oh well—I guess Republicans’ desire for more “dams” mattered more than “owning the libs”. The new site will be huge–at about 1.5 million acre feet (one acre feet equals 326,000 gallons), but it won’t be the largest. The most recent site, Melones, is 2.4 million acre feet, with the largest in California being Lake Shasta at a staggering 4.8 million acre feet.
